Malaysia's world-renowned doctor turned full-time comedian, Jason Leong, is set to drop overdosed prescriptions of laughter where he'll serve hilarious tales about anything under the sun, including why he's leaving Malaysia for good. The man is the first comedian rooted in Southeast Asia to produce two comedy specials on Netflix, the first being 2020's "Hashtag Blessed", and his newest release in 2023, "Ride With Caution". Following his acclaimed sold-out HEATY tour, the doctor's back on duty with Brain Drain World Tour 2023.
Born in Malaysia, Jason Leong grew up as the class clown with his astounding wit and personality. He studied medicine in Ireland and worked as a doctor in Malaysia before making the decision to pursue stand-up comedy full-time.
From helping save lives to making fun of people's lives – though one can argue he still saves lives with doses of laughter, Jason Leong took a career pivot after contacting Phoon Chi Ho and landing his first 5-minute open mic gig. "It went well," he shared with FirstClasse. "and that was life-changing".
With transformed prescriptions that overdose audiences with giggles, laughs, and reliability, Leong pokes fun at anything under the sun, of course including Malaysian stereotypes and uncles riding bikes without underwear.
"I think comedy is great for uniting people," he shared with FirstClasse. "We’re always so divided but when you go to a comedy club, we all laugh at the same things. From the stage, all you hear is laughter and you can’t differentiate who is Indian, Chinese or Malay. There’s no difference among us."
Uniting people with the power of laughter and crafting his stand-up sets that revolve around what audiences can relate to, Leong definitely mastered his craft, earning him two Netflix specials and bagging the right to be the first Malaysian comedian to feature at Just for Laughs: Montreal.
"Leong’s pivot from saving lives to mocking them has seen him fly from success to success," Time Out shared in a review of Brain Drain. "Ride With Caution, is evidence enough that he is a talent destined for greatness, potentially even on the path to becoming Malaysia’s first uncircumcised prime minister."
As Dr. Jason Leong calls his patients to unite with prescriptions of giggles and why he's leaving Malaysia for good, make sure to schedule your Brain Drain appointment at Gramercy Theatre on July 1st by booking your tickets now!
